Semiotics

Lecture notes

“Seeing comes before words. The child looks and recognizes before it can speak” John Berger, Ways of Seeing.

Semiotics is the study of signs and sign processes, the relationship between signs and linguistics. I am researching into visual language in order to further understand how visual communication works. Terms and theories in linguistics and semiotics combine together and cross paths. Semiotics/Semiology help us to decode complex imagery that are loaded with multiple “signs.”

Appropriation examples.

Appropration

Appropriation means elements that have been borrowed from previous work and are used in the creation of new work. This raises questions of plagiarism and how far it is acceptable to use something to the point where it verges on plagiarism. Examples that I have looked at are the art movement Pop Art. Andy Warhol created his Marilyn prints in 1962, he used colour and repetition of print. Lichtenstein created ‘Girl with ribbon’ 3 years later using very similar style and technique but different subject matter. I myself don’t see this as copying but if Warhol hadn’t created Marilyn would Lichtenstein have created the girl with the ribbon? Lichtenstein was deemed ‘unoriginal’ by the tabloids because of his subject matter.

My final font for the typography project, I really enjoyed the whole process of getting to the final piece. I did a lot of refinement and experiments to get to this stage.

This is a screen shot of the Dalton Maag website, the company create type in many different languages and styles. In our lecture Maag discussed the problems that different languages can bring. The english language has all together about 80 characters (caps, lowercase and numbers) whereas chinese has thousands which creates a heavy work load. Dalton Maag have produced work for big companies such as Nokia, McDonalds and Toyota.

We had a guest lecturer today called Bruno Maag (http://www.daltonmaag.com/). The lecture was very interesting and informative, firstly he went through a brief history of type. Gutenbergs 42 line bible, Maag describes it as the “most important document.” Without this way of production people would not have gained knowledge and their wouldn’t have been a renaissance.

These are a few photographs from a visit to the Yorkshire Sculpture park, most of the sculptures had been taken down to prepare for a big exhibition in March but we still got to see the brilliant work of Donna Wilson (http://donnawilson.com/).

After completing the alphabet I realised that for this task my letters were too refined for this stage so I am now doing it again in a thicker tape. This means I can then do more digital manipulation with the letter rather than them being refined already. These are two examples of the difference between the two uses of tape.
